We had some virus fun in our house last week. I break it down with J.C. on today’s edition of Dadline. (23 minutes)
Everybody is fine now. We were very lucky, and a little bit prepared.
Since it’s Thanksgiving in the US and I've talked out the COVID thing on Dadline, this week I’m just bringing you a few songs to play while you’re fixing the turkey. (Did you brine that bird? Of course you did. Well done, you.)
First up: An old favorite of mine, “Half A World Away” by R.E.M. (3 minutes)
Next, a new favorite that a friend recommended to me just before my camping trip. This is “Due West” by Kelsey Lu. (4 minutes)
Since “Due West” talks about California, we need to include a song that is meant to be played while driving through the hills of Los Angeles at night, with the car windows open and the song going full blast: “Ribs” by Lorde. (4 minutes)
“Ribs” is a great listen all on its own, but it also has such a unique structure that it inspired a whole episode of Switched on Pop. (The Switched on Pop episode is 45 minutes, but the “Ribs” discussion is the first 20 minutes or so.)
One more song pick before the home stretch. My son Nick put me on to “Little Numbers” by BOY when he first went off to college. It’s been a mainstay in my Spotify playlists ever since. (4 minutes)
And Finally…
I first heard “Miss You” in early 2018, and it’s been a favorite since then. The title and lyrics hit a little differently these days…. (3 minutes)
Wishing all of you continued strength while we miss each other a little longer, and hang in there for some vaccines. Have a lovely weekend.
- Michael
