Hope Notes: Totwaffles

“I hope they get the schools open again next week.”
“I hope they get some more toilet paper at the grocery store.”
“I hope we still get to take that big vacation in May.”
There’s a big difference between hoping and wishing, and this is a really important time to understand that difference.
To wish for something is to place your faith in external forces. You’re looking for magic answers. When you wish upon a star, to get way too literal, you’re asking a giant ball of gas millions of miles away to make your dreams come true. That makes for a lovely song in a movie. It also sets you up for disappointment.
Because the schools are not likely to open again next week, or the week after.
Then what?
When we practice hope instead, we place our faith in ourselves and in humanity. We can ask ourselves, “What will it take to get through this? How can I help from where I am?” And we can trust that other people, with a wonderful diversity of ideas and talents, are asking themselves the same.
Road to Recovery
As of last night, there are at least 94,175 people worldwide who have tested positive for COVID-19 and have fully recovered. This is an increase of 10,063 since our last edition. An unknown number more have encountered the virus on their own and made a full recovery. We hope for strength in those who are actively suffering right now, in the healthcare workers giving vital care, and in the lives of everyone who has lost a loved one or friend in the midst of this crisis.
Good Moves
How people are practicing generosity, ingenuity, and love around us right now.
Special note: My wife, Chelsea, and our daughters, Maria and Anna, are making surgical masks at the request of local nurses whose hospitals have run out of masks. They will be doing tutorials on Instagram for anyone who would like to learn. Follow Maria at @mariasperger on Twitter or @graphicworkonly on Instagram for details.
School’s Out
Dispatches from our giant improvised homeschooling adventure.
And Finally…
Sure, it was cool when Americans figured out how to land on the Moon. But have you heard about our… totwaffles? Click through to catch the shocking plot twist about halfway down the thread. We might not still be friends after you read it, but I’ll take that chance.
You can subscribe to Hope Notes for free, forever. Please feel free to share with others who may find this useful. And thanks for reading!
Hang in there, friends.
